Housing Benefit
This is a means-tested benefit (see Introduction) for people on a low income. It contributes to the cost of rent and is administered by the local Council.
For most people in private sector accommodation, the amount of Housing Benefit is determined by reference to the Local Housing Allowance. This is a set amount dependant upon the number of people who live in the property and on their ages.
