DWRU making work pay

Better off calculations for people with learning disabilities

This project is funded by Devon County Council.  It is part of the Government’s initiative to ensure that as many people as possible have the opportunity to work, including people with Learning Disabilities.

Devon Welfare Rights Unit’s role in this project is to offer independent, impartial and confidential benefits advice for customers (and their families) registered with Adult Community Services who have a Learning Disability and are aged under 50. The service is provided when work is being considered or offered.

The advice service is based on maximising current entitlement and providing information on how income is affected by working.  The adviser usually provides calculations for at least 3 different working scenarios to enable people to make informed choices about taking work.

One purpose of the project is to counter the myths about people with Learning Disabilities taking work e.g. that they can only ever be £20 per week better off. The vast majority of people who work are financially better off, particularly if they work full time or at least 16 hours per week. However, the benefits and tax credits system is complex and people need advice tailored to their own particular situations.
